Reading Our Poem

Response: I kind of stumbled on my words today, because I was nervous that people would judge me for it. I did like reading it aloud. I did read from the heart, so I hoped people didn't think it was stupid. I did feel a bit insecure. I did love my poem, and I felt like I did good. Hopefully I got a good grade, because my public speaking has gotten way worse. Summary: Today in class we read our poems. Reflection: It felt nice to read mine aloud.

Confidence

Response: I don't feel too confident, because I don't understand the claims too much. The easiest part of today was stating the claim, and the hardest part was finding a counter claim to it. It did help me, because at first I had no idea what each of the claims mean, values, policy, and facts, but now I have a better understanding of it. Summary: Today in class, we read an article about claims and tried to find counterarguments for them. Reflection: I still don't get claims of policy, but I think I understand the broad sense better.

If I Could Change Something

Response: If I could change a rule of school, I would change the funding. I wouldn’t just make the clubs and societies have to earn their own money and fund all the schools money on trips and the sports teams. I would give each society a good fair of funding and let them do fundraisers as an extra way to get money. Because right now, Lakeside is taking sides. And also we are a broke public school, so I don’t know why we waste money on summer trips out of the country. Summary: Today in class, we did more notes and practice about ethos, pathos, and logos. Reflection: I think I understand ethos a lot more now.

Challenging You

Response: I have improv club a lot. But one day, we did a game about arguements. It was just a topic, and we had to choose if we were for or against it, and explain why. I was on the side that global warming was something bad in the world. And I had a hard time explaining it, because my opponent was sprouting nonsense. I ended up losing, but it was a really funny debate. Summary: Today in class, we took notes about ethos, pathos, and logos. Reflection: I think I really understanded it well.

A time where someone had a lasting impact on me

Response: I used to be a very scared person because I felt like I needed to do things to make people like me. I bought things and broke myself trying to make people who didn't care about me happy. Then my sister told me that I needed to do things that made me happy. Not them. She told me that helping people is great, but it's okay to be a little selfish sometimes. "It's not selfishness when it's protecting yourself," she said. So I've been happier after that, thanks to her. Summary: Today we just did a blog post. Reflection: We're going to do a pep rally; I'm not excited.

Writing a poem

Response: I thought it was fun to write my own poem. Very out there. I liked writing about something bittersweet. What I found really challenging was to find words that all rhymed together. It was kind of hard when I was talking about two words that don't rhyme and trying to make them rhyme. Also, not being able to use anything besides our brains and our teacher's help to find rhyming words was also very difficult for me. Summary: Today in class, we wrote our own poems. Reflection: I wrote one about the afterlife and added a woman in it. I wrote it because I was remembering my grandma.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Response: When I had to step out of my comfort zone, I had to sing in front of my entire class. Before that, I developed some bad stage fright, which really didn't help. I sang, and it was on tune, but off tempo. I felt really embarrassed after that, and I didn't want to go back. But my friend told me I had a great recovery after I messed up, and that really helped with my confidence. Summary: Today in class, we dug deeper into the poem we were reading yesterday. Reflection: I found it easier to interpret the poem Constantly Risking Absurdity. Digging deeper really helped me understand what the acrobat and the poet really have in common and what it means.
